A major contractor with the country's Federal Security Service (FSB) had 7.5 terabytes of data stolen and distributed to media outlets for publishing, according to reports. Hackers using the name 0v1ru$ breached Moscow IT company SyTech, who work with the FSB on internet projects, and left a smiley 'Yoba' face on the company's homepage, along with pictures that revealed the supposed breach on July 13, revealed. The data was passed to hacking group Digital Revolution, who sent the files on to media outlets and taunted the FSB, it was claimed. The breach was described as possibly the largest data leak in the history of Russian intelligence services, which included details of projects such as social media 'scraping' - extracting data from sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn - and the 'de-anonymisation' of users of the Tor browser, it was said.Tor is used to bypass restrictions and hide data, and is notoriously used to access the so-called 'dark web'.

The projects reportedly involve harvesting data from social media and Russian enterprises, along with projects relating to Russia's plans to construct its own internal internet. It was said that SyTech's projects were largely contracted with Military Unit 71330, a subset of the FSB's 16th Directorate, who handle signals intelligence.
